Mac OS X Features vs Windows Vista: Response to Robert Scoble
Robert Scoble has an interesting rant responding to an MacDailyNews article comparing features of the upcoming Windows Vista operating system to currently shipping Mac OS X. While I understand where he’s coming from (the MacDailyNews article is heavily slanted), he’s missing the point . . . his rant can be found HERE, excerpts below with my responses:
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize there’s a Tablet Mac already shipping (is there a Mac that you can carry around and use a pen with?). Ours is already shipping, don’t need to wait for Vista.
While I am a rabid Tablet PC users, converting many of my colleagues to the ways of the tablet . . . I am also a user of Mac products owning a PowerBook, PowerMac and a Mini . Would I buy a Mac tablet . . . I don’t know. I would have to do a review of such a product. Microsoft has a huge lead in the tablet space . . . but it wasn’t until SP1 that the Tablet PC really became a legitimate replacement for a laptop. Tablet PC also requires additional software to really make the tablet work well, namely Microsoft OneNote and Office 2003. Not small dollar additions on top of the price of the tablet. Would Apple charge for these additional software apps to make their solution complete? I don’t think so given the Apple reputation of providing all the basic tools you need to make your computing experience complete (like they do with bundling the iLife Suite).
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize there’s a Media Center Mac already shipping (is there a Mac with a TV tuner built in so you can do Tivo-like stuff?). Ours is already shipping, don’t need to wait for Vista.
This is a specialized version of the Windows OS, that last I checked could only be integrated with a hardware platform at the OEM level. Media Center features are not even included with the base Windows OS. Can’t exactly add a tuner card to the garden variety Dell machine and have a Media Center PC now can you?
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize that there’s a Mac phone that integrates with the Mac OS already shipping (is there a Mac SmartPhone phone equivalent already shipping?). Ours is already shipping, no need to wait for Vista.
I tried the Windows Smart Phone . . . and found it not to be all that smart. Eventually I went to the Treo 650, which in my opinion runs circles around the Windows Smart Phone, but not without it’s issues.
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize that there’s a Mac shipping that runs on Intel (there will be soon, yes, but I didn’t realize it was shipping already!).
What’s your point?
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize that there’s a Mac shipping that’ll integrate with the Xbox. Ours is already shipping, no need to wait for Vista.
Still missing your point . . .
SCOBLE – I didn’t realize that there’s a Mac shipping that has integration with MSN Direct Watches. Ours is already shipping, no need to wait for Vista.
How exactly do these items “integrate”?
SCOBLE – Wow, where do I get a Mac that does all that?
Not exactly wanting to get into a battle over this, but where can I get a single Windows machine that does all of the above?
