The Marriage Issue

I’m getting so tired of the “gay marriage” debate. It has little to do with being gay and a lot to do with control by a minority group that wants everyone else to think they are the majority.

I have a hard time understanding the argument of the Republican Neo-Conservative Christian Coalition in their “defense of marriage” as a union between a man and a woman . . . It reminds me of a stingy 4-year old who doesn’t want to share his favorite toy with a sibling. No no no you can’t make me!!!!!

Why on earth is the government in the business of marriage in the first place? Here in the US (and for a large part in Europe), marriage has historically been tied to a religion. Within the last hundred years or so, the governments only role was to record a union between two people. These unions were not regulated by the government as they are today with the current marriage license system. The license is the key to this whole spectacle, and to add insult to injury, the “system” is inconsistent from state to state, and even from county to county. With the federal, state and local government sticking their collective noses into what used to be a local community or church congregational matter, they’ve perverted the personal lifetime commitment of two people into that of a three ring circus of discrimination and a revenue generation opportunity. Come on, I do not need a license to have a child . . . but I have to get a license to confess my life long commitment to another human being, and with it receive the benefits of family law and preferential tax treatment (the source for a future rant). Funny, these same “family defending” Republicans continue to support every Americans’ “RIGHT” to buy a firearm without a license. Twisted.

So if understand the thought process:

- Have a child without a license = Good
- Commit yourself to another human without government consent = Bad
- Buy a gun without a any incumbrance by the government = Good

Huh? How does that work?

So what’s my point you ask? Government needs to get back to it’s roots. Go back to recording unions between two individuals but stay out of their lives. To protect your revenue generation, go ahead and charge a reasonable fee to cover the costs of recording such a union for tax and family law purposes (we’ll get back to the tax issue latter).

It’s time to separate the legal union from the marriage ceremony. It is up to the churches and individuals to decide how best to officiate and recognize their union in their community; this is not purpose or role of the government.

A legal union should be available to any two individuals of legal age who commit themselves to spend their lives together; a completely separate legal union away from the scrutiny of church and community involvement . . . it’s none of their business.

Republican Neo-Conservative Christians need to understand that they are very quickly undermining the support that they have enjoyed riding on President Bush’s coat tails. His reign will come to an end as all tyrannical rulers have in time. You guys are just too weird for the mainstream Republicans that make up the majority of your party. You’re a liability. Most republicans support less government in the lives of every American citizen, not just those that agree with them. The Republican majority will rise up and squash you like the parasites that you’ve become, if for no other reason than to continue to live another political day.

In case you were wondering, I do not support any political party . . . they’re all too weird for my tastes.
